What’s in a Word?
The start of every year has me thinking about words. Not just any word, one I want to take with me through the year. One that means something to me alone. In the past I’ve chosen some great words with powerful meanings: be, persevere, warrior, you get the picture. They were words to remind me of what I was working towards. And now, when I look at them, I see the same words that many people have used for themselves. This year I wanted something different. A slant word that takes me outside of myself.
2016 is a few days away and I’m in a bit of a creative slump. Both with writing and photography, I’m struggling to stay energized and inspired. But I don’t want this to be about me. Maybe I’m tired of looking at my navel. Tired of my doubts. With that in mind I stumbled across a word that stuck its claws into me––I knew it was the one.
Sonder. (n) the realization that each passerby has a life as vivid and complex as yours.
I love to watch people, make up stories about their lives based on what they wear or what they say. Some people walk with a slight stutter on their left side or talk with their hands or say a word just a little different, giving me a little hint of their personality. People tell stories in everything they do. I want to hear them. I want to be a witness to who they really are. And maybe, I’ll be changed because I take time to notice others. And just maybe, my inspiration will come from them, or maybe even you.
