For my 2025 word of the year, I chose courage. I know, it’s not the most original pick—but hear me out. Something about courage stuck with me this time, especially after watching a documentary on The Tragically Hip. For those unfamiliar, they’re kind of a Canadian thing. A band that captured the soul of Canada through their music and lyrics.One line from their song Courage always sticks with me: “Courage, it couldn’t come at a worse time.” Now, that might mean different things to different people, but for me, it’s about when you finally find the courage to face your fears. You muster the strength to press on, to deal with danger or difficulty—and it’s usually at the most inconvenient moment. Let’s be honest, courage rarely feels good. It’s putting yourself out there, knowing you might take a few hits, which is so much easier to avoid (hello, introvert). But as I get older, that nagging question keeps popping up: If not now, when?So in 2025, I’m embracing courage. I’m going to get a little scrappy. It won’t be easy, it probably won’t be at the perfect moment, but if not now, when?#WordOfTheYear #Courage #TragicallyHip

Nature photography is not my usual thing. I prefer a more urban vibe for my photography. But this past year I’ve been playing around with the idea of duality in nature. How textures, colors, layers, and patterns play off each other in such interesting ways. There’s something fascinating about how two completely different elements can exist side by side—informing, shaping, and contrasting each other in ways that make them more powerful together. I’ve started a photo series exploring this, capturing moments where opposites not only exist but thrive in the same space. So far, I’ve only managed to capture a few, but it’s a concept I plan to keep digging into.

Here’s round two of “Meet the Characters” from my upcoming book, Wildflower. Introducing Sabastian—the big bad wolf who’s been prowling the mountains and shadows of small towns for centuries. Unlike the stories where the wolf is all hunger and rage, Sabastian is the beast, but with a thread of humanity. He doesn’t wrestle with what he’s become because, in truth, the beast is where he feels most like himself.But that doesn’t mean he’s predictable. Sabastian is calculating, sharp, and deeply aware of the power that comes with being more predator than man. His human side is a faint echo—a shadow he barely cares to remember. What he wants now, what he’s always wanted, is to stay ahead of whatever forces threaten his place in the natural order.He does his duty—ushering the next human into the fold—and now he’s gone, a shadow fading into the wilderness. For him, Rosa is just another piece of the beast’s design, another prey marked for transformation. Whether she crumbles or rises under the weight of it all isn’t his concern. Sabastian has no time for remorse, no room for attachment. The beast demands motion, and motion is survival.

I shot these images when we lived in Edmonton, AB. It was just before digital cameras became a thing, and my trusty old Pentax Z-10 came with me everywhere. These images remind me of the magic of nature and the textures in our world. It reminds me of the silence of snow and no matter how many pairs of wool socks I had on, my feet still froze. I’m still thankful for the in floor heat registers!So here’s to 2025: a year for making new memories while cherishing the old, for rediscovering what we love about the past—film cameras, warming hands over a fire (or the heat register), and everything that roots us in the moment. Cheers to more time outside, breathing in the cold air, and remembering what it’s like to truly create, connect, and live. I thought I’d do a little installment of “Meet the Characters” from my upcoming book, Wildflower: A Little Red Riding Hood Retelling.Let me introduce you to Rosa, my thorny, stubborn, wolf-bitten girl who just wanted to run her flower shop, keep her family safe, and live her life in peace. But fate had other ideas.Now she’s stuck fighting her own nature while dodging creepy Collectors who want her for a trophy and ducking mysterious ravens sent by her dead grandma who lives in the Otherworld.
Rosa is messy, angry, and doing her best to stay human, even when the wolf inside has other ideas. I’ve dragged her through so much darkness, and she keeps coming out sharper every time.Get ready to follow her down the dark forest path—it’s gonna be a ride!#otherworldly #fairytale #amwriting #onceuponatime

This whole Wildflower book project started as a tiny, unassuming short story. I thought, “Quick and easy, just a little tale.” But no. It morphed into a novella, then into an illustrated book, and now I’ve got plans to make a hand-bound special edition. Turns out, this story has ideas of its own, and I’m just along for the ride.Maybe it’s because I can’t leave well enough alone. Or maybe some projects just demand to be bigger, louder, and way more complicated than you expected. Either way, here I am—neck deep in creating something that feels like it’s becoming a living, breathing thing.Do you ever feel like your work takes on a life of its own? There’s something pretty cool about those little towns tucked away in the mountains, the ones that feel like they’ve been there forever. You walk down the main street, and it’s like stepping into a story—weathered buildings, quirky shops, and a hum of history in the air. That’s the vibe I wanted for Creekside, British Columbia, the town where Rosa’s story in Wildflower begins.Creekside isn’t real (well, not exactly). It’s what happens when imagination slams headfirst into reality. It’s loosely inspired by Nelson, BC—a place that stole my heart with its charm and weird, wonderful energy. But like all fictional worlds, Creekside evolved, taking on its own quirks, secrets, and a touch of something… otherworldly.For me, it’s the “almost real” that makes imagined places so intriguing. They’re grounded enough to feel familiar, but just strange enough to make you question what’s lurking behind that old shop door or in the shadows of the forest at the edge of town.Do you have a favorite fictional place that felt so real, you swore you could visit it?
