There’s Nothing Like A Good Sidekick
I have a thing for Marvin the Martian. He can breathe in space, grow space aliens from a seed and he keeps Bugs Bunny on his toes. Sure he looks angry all the time (could be because of the plastic skirt he has to wear) and even though Bugs always seems to have the upper hand, Marvin still rocks the galaxy with his crazy voice and his tenacity in dealing with an intergalactic bunny who always wins the carrot.
This little guy (below) was a birthday present from my boys. Marvin sits beside my computer, watches me work and gives me that menacing look of his when I get sidetracked by a squirrel going across my computer screen (also known as social media and checking my emails).
Marvin was doing alright. But I couldn’t help but wonder what I could do to put a smile on his face…
Then it hit me, maybe he was lonely. He needed a sidekick. Someone who might have the same interests and who has a thing for plastic space skirts. With another trip to the Funko Pop website, I found the right match. K9 now sits with Marvin beside my computer. And even though Marvin hasn’t lost his menacing space scowl, I can tell he’s a happier martian.
When I see them together I can’t help but think of what a good sidekick can do––even for us.
I had a crazy dream last week, the kind that mishmash a bunch of different people from your life into one setting and yet it seems so normal. It started with my immigration lawyer then flashed to a friend from my early married years. From there, I saw the first friend I made when we moved back to Canada (when I was 12 yrs. old) who led me to two friends from high school who met me at my old locker.
I was actually smiling when I woke up. I lay awake thinking of the people I’ve met and who’ve helped shape me in big and small ways. I’ve lost track of some. Some have passed away and others have stuck with me. It’s a strange feeling to know that so many fingerprints have touched my life.
I would probably be doing alright on my own, but why would I want to––especially when I can be even better with a great bunch of sidekicks. We all need someone to share dreams with, eat ice cream with, kick our butt, and who will wear plastic skirts out in public with us. I think its safe to say that we are better, stronger and happier individuals because of our sidekicks. Just look how happy Marvin is!
Who are your sidekicks and how did they make you better? Love to hear your comments…
Image note: I shot these two on location…yes, that means my house and nothing really exotic. K9 kept wagging his tail but I got the shot in the end.
